Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Emblem and Flag
The Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ emblem¡¯s design was approved by the GA on 7 December 1946. It consists of a map of the world surrounded by two olive branches. Olive branches are ancient Greek symbols for peace. The map of the world illustrates the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ¡¯s work toward world peace. To prevent the misuse of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ emblem, it cannot be used without the authorization of the Secretary-General.
On 20 October 1947, the GA adopted a resolution about the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ flag. The resolution stated that the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ flag would bear the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ emblem on a light blue background.
