Peacekeeping mission
Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) took over from an earlier Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ peacekeeping operation ¨C the United Nations Organization Mission in Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUC) ¨C on 1 July 2010. It was done in accordance with Security Council to reflect the new phase reached in the country.
The mission has been authorized to use all necessary means to carry out its mandate relating, among other things, to the protection of civilians, humanitarian personnel and human rights defenders under imminent threat of physical violence and to support the Government of the DRC in its stabilization and peace consolidation efforts.

Special Envoy for the Great Lakes
In its Resolution 2098 (2013), the Security Council welcomed the signing of the PSC Framework. It called on the Special Envoy, in coordination with the Special Representative for the DRC to ¡°lead, coordinate and assess the implementation of national and regional commitments under the Peace, Security and Cooperation Framework, including through the establishment of benchmarks and appropriate follow-up measures¡±.
The Security Council further encouraged the Special Envoy to ¡°lead a comprehensive political process that includes all relevant stakeholders to address the underlying root causes of the conflict¡±.
