The situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question

The President: I would like to warmly welcome the high-level representatives present in the Security Council Chamber. Their presence today underscores the importance of the subject matter under discussion.

In accordance with rule 37 of the Council¡¯s provisional rules of procedure, I invite the representatives of Armenia, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Cuba, Egypt, Iceland, India, Iraq, Ireland, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Israel, Japan, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Lebanon, Lithuania, Malaysia, Maldives, Malta, Mauritania, Mexico, the Federated States of Micronesia, Morocco, Namibia, the Kingdom of the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, the Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, the Republic of Korea, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, the Syrian Arab Republic, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Tunisia, T¨¹rkiye, Uganda, the United Arab Emirates, the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Viet Nam and Yemen to participate in this meeting.

In accordance with rule 39 of the Council¡¯s provisional rules of procedure, I invite the following briefers to participate in this meeting: Mr. Khaled Khiari, Assistant Secretary-General for the Middle East, Europe, the Americas, Asia and the Pacific, Departments of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and Peace Operations; and Mr. Tony Blair, member of the Executive Board of the Board of Peace.

In accordance with rule 39 of the Council¡¯s provisional rules of procedure, I also invite the following to participate in this meeting: His Excellency Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States; His Excellency Mr. Stavros Lambrinidis, Head of the Delegation of the European Union to the United Nations; His Excellency Mr. Umar Hadi, Vice-Chair of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People; and His Excellency Mr. Paul BeresfordHill, Permanent Observer of the Sovereign Order of Malta to the United Nations.

I propose that the Council invite the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of the Observer State of Palestine to participate in the meeting, in accordance with the provisional rules of procedure and the previous practice in this regard.

The Security Council will now begin its consideration of the item on its agenda.
