Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ General Assembly President, Mr. Dennis Francis, to attend the Fourth International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS4) in Antigua and Barbuda<\/strong><\/p>\n

New York, 24 May 2024 <\/strong><\/em>\u2013 The President of the United Nations General Assembly (PGA), His Excellency, Mr. Dennis Francis, will travel to St. Johns, Antigua and Barbuda from 25 to 28 May to participate in the Fourth International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS4).<\/p>\n

SIDS4 is hosted by the Government of Antigua and Barbuda under the theme: Charting the Course Toward Resilient Prosperity. <\/em>The once-in-a-decade Conference aims to address the multiple interlocking challenges facing Small Island Developing States (SIDS), including the impacts of climate change, the debt crisis, and post-pandemic social and economic recovery.<\/p>\n

While in Antigua and Barbuda, the PGA is expected to address an audience of Heads of State and Government, Ministers, and other high-level dignitaries and participants at the opening segment of the Conference. He will use the opportunity to advocate for the inclusion of vulnerability in measuring prosperity and securing access to development finance. The PGA will also highlight the imperative of addressing the impacts of climate change, including sea-level rise and the threats posed to Small Island Developing States.<\/p>\n

Since assuming the Presidency of the General Assembly in September 2023, the PGA has emphasized the need to address the critical issue of sea-level rise and its impact on SIDS and other vulnerable countries. This issue will be addressed by world leaders during the General Assembly High-Level Week in September 2024.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Whilst in St. John\u2019s, the PGA will pay a courtesy call on the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, H.E. Gaston Browne, and hold bilateral meetings with the Prime Minister of Samoa, H.E. Ms. Fiam\u0113 Naomi Mata’afa, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Antigua and Barbuda, Mr. Everly Paul Chet Greene. PGA also plans to meet with the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Resident Coordinator for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, Mr. Didier Trebucq.<\/p>\n

The PGA will also host a roundtable discussion on Gender Equality in SIDS; engage with a small group of children and young people before participating in the closing ceremony of the SIDS Children and Youth Action Summit; and meet with civil society organizations and participate in several side events. Other planned engagements include a breakfast meeting on Addressing the Impacts of Sea-Level Rise.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The PGA\u2019s delegation includes his Chef de Cabinet, his Special Adviser on Gender Equality and Women\u2019s Empowerment, a Special Adviser, a Team Leader for Sustainable Development and Financing for Development, as well as a Communications Adviser.<\/p>\n

Travel costs for the visit are covered by the OPGA\u2019s Trust Fund and the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Regular Budget.<\/p>\n

Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ General Assembly President Dennis Francis to attend the 67th<\/sup> <\/strong>session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs in Vienna, Austria,<\/strong> and the 11th<\/sup> Global Baku Forum in Baku, Azerbaijan<\/strong><\/p>

New York, 12 March 2024 <\/strong><\/em>\u2013 The President of the United Nations General Assembly (PGA), His Excellency Mr. Dennis Francis, will undertake official travel to Vienna, Austria from 13 to 14 March 2024, and to Baku, Azerbaijan from 15 to 16 March 2024.<\/p>

In Vienna<\/strong>, the PGA will attend the opening of the 67th<\/sup> session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND).\u00a0<\/p>

The PGA will highlight the role of the CND as policymaking body of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ system with prime responsibility for drug-related matters. He also will underline the need to address the emergence of synthetic drugs, such as fentanyl, and the societal impacts of this ever-growing crisis.<\/p>

While in Vienna, the PGA will hold separate bilateral meetings with H.E. Mr. Alexander Schallenberg, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Austria; and H.E. Mr. Wolfgang Sobotka, President of the National Council of Austria.<\/p>

Furthermore, he will also hold separate meetings with H.E. Mr. Philbert Abaka Johnson, Ambassador, Permanent Representative of Ghana to the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵOV, Chair of the 67th<\/sup> session of the CND; H.E. Mr. Ivo \u0160ramek, Ambassador, Permanent Representative of Czechia to the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵOV, Chair of the 33rd<\/sup> session of the CCPCJ; Ms. Ghada Waly, Director-General of Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵOV and Executive Director of Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵODC; Mr. Gerd Mueller, Director General of Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵIDO; and Mr. Robert Floyd, Executive Secretary of CTBTO.<\/p>

The PGA will also use the opportunity of his visit to deliver a lecture at the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna, the oldest of its kind in the world, to engage academia and civil society on the work of the United Nations and the General Assembly.<\/p>

The PGA\u2019s delegation to Vienna includes his Deputy Chef de Cabinet, a Senior Political Affairs Adviser as well as a Communications Adviser.<\/p>

From Vienna, the President of the General Assembly will travel to Baku<\/strong>, Azerbaijan, to attend the 11th<\/sup> Global Baku Forum from 15 to 16 March 2024.<\/p>

The PGA will deliver a special address on the Forum\u2019s theme \u2018Fixing a Fractured World\u2019<\/em>, emphasizing the need for unity, solidarity, dialogue, and diplomacy to address ongoing geopolitical tensions; and with a view to restore the multilateral system as well as international cooperation.<\/p>

He will also participate in a panel discussion on the objectives that can be set for the 2024 Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Climate Change Conference (Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵFCCC, COP29)<\/strong> to be held in Baku at the end of 2024.<\/p>

During his official visit to Azerbaijan, the PGA will pay a courtesy call on H.E. Mr. Ilham Aliyev, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan; and also hold bilateral meetings with H.E. Mrs. Sahiba Gafarova, Chair of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan, H.E. Mr. Jeyhun Bayramov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Mr. Elnur Soltanov, Chief Executive Officer of the COP29 Presidency.<\/p>

The PGA\u2019s delegation to Baku includes his Chef de Cabinet, a Special Adviser on the Summit of the Future, a Deputy Team Leader of the Political Affairs, Peace and Security Team, as well as a Communications Adviser.<\/p>
