Excellencies,<\/i><\/i><\/p>\n

Distinguished Delegates,<\/i><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n

\n

Let me welcome and commend Ambassador V\u00e1clav B\u00e1lek for his unswerving leadership as President of the Human Rights Council during this precarious\u00a0time.<\/p>\n

\n

A time when climate change, poverty and food insecurity continue to wrench our societies.<\/p>\n

\n

When a staggering\u00a0108.4 million people<\/b>\u00a0worldwide have been forcibly displaced by persecution, conflict and violence.<\/p>\n

\n

And when \u2013 while we were already tested enough by the wars in Ukraine, Africa, and the worrying situation in Haiti \u2013 the gravest escalation of violence in the Middle East in decades continues to play out before our eyes, and this time in a much more dramatic and visceral fashion.<\/p>\n

\n

Against this backdrop, the Council\u2019s role in promoting and protecting human rights and addressing violations \u2013 wherever and whenever they occur \u2013 has never been more critical, and more consequential.<\/p>\n

\n

The presentation of the Council\u2019s annual report this morning offers a prime opportunity to reflect on how to strengthen coordination and coherence in the work of the General Assembly and the Council.<\/p>\n

\n

The question is: How do we leverage the comparative advantages of these two bodies to maximize our collective influence and impact?<\/p>\n

The Human Rights Council has proven its relevance, time and again, by:<\/p>\n
