Thank you, Mr. President,\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n I am honored by the trust the Assembly has placed in me through my election by acclamation to the position of President of the General Assembly at its 77th session. I feel truly privileged to have the opportunity to serve the community of the Member States and work with other stakeholders throughout the upcoming session.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n I express my special gratitude to the Member States of the East European Group for supporting my nomination, to the President and the Government of Hungary for their valuable support to my candidature, my team and the Permanent Mission of Hungary who have worked with me persistently during the preparations for this endeavor. Yet, first and foremost, I am grateful to my family who patiently stood by me all along this journey.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n I would also take this opportunity to commend His Excellency Mr. Abdulla Shahid for his outstanding work as President of the General Assembly at its 76th session. I congratulate President Shahid on his tireless efforts in guiding our work throughout the current session. His valuable support was crucial for my team and myself to have an insight into conducting the business of the GA and to learn good practices of it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n I also thank the Secretary-General for his leadership and commitment to guiding the United Nations to be up to the tasks of the 21<\/span>st<\/span> century.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n We are living in global, multiple \u2013 and interlinked \u2013 crises of food, energy and debt, while water crises look like becoming the next imminent threats. With global supply shortages and soaring prices, 49 million people in 43 countries are already at emergency levels of hunger.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Due to the continuous climate emergency, oceans have never before been as acidic and warm as in 2022, with sea levels setting a record. Biodiversity loss is equally at an unprecedented intensity. \u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Global conflicts have never been this fierce since the end of the last century. 303 million people are in urgent need of humanitarian aid and protection in 69 countries across the world, a more than 10 per cent increase since last December.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The cruel war in Ukraine is adding new dimensions to these ominous challenges. \u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Excellencies,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The series of consultations with Member States has helped me to understand your priorities, concerns and desires. They were very useful for creating my vision statement.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n By electing me, you have reconfirmed the assessment that the geopolitical risks and those stemming from the unsustainable way of our development have started to merge and reinforce each other. Together with the war on Ukraine and other armed conflicts elsewhere, they create a \u201cperfect storm\u201d and unprecedented instability for the years to come.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Therefore, we should seek integrated solutions to the systemic challenges. There is no way back to the old normal. The only way out of our current predicament is through continued reforms and transformation of this organization and strengthening our cooperation. We must do much better in delivering on our jointly agreed goals, commitments and pledges.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n You have agreed that science must be invited to advise us on a regular basis.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Similarly, you have approved that the General Assembly must work in an impact-oriented manner. Communities throughout the world must feel that our actions are relevant and useful for them. The Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ\u2019s eight billion shareholders over the globe also need to understand the results of our decisions. The world out there counts on us, and rightly so.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n As you have seen in my vision statement, I suggested <\/span>\u201cSolutions through Solidarity, Sustainability and Science\u201c <\/span><\/i>for the motto of the 77<\/span>th<\/span> General Assembly.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n In order to address the complex challenges, to take due responsibilities for the key missions of the United Nations, namely peace and security, human rights and sustainable development, I\u2019ve proposed the following priorities:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Ladies and Gentlemen,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The Office of the 77<\/span>th<\/span> PGA will pursue an integrated agenda of peace, prosperity and sustainability, and will be an agent of multilateralism, multiculturalism and multilingualism.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n My doors will be open to all of you. Impartiality, with the intention to build bridges among sides, will be our principle of operation.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n I will coordinate actions with the Secretary General, the Security Council, the ECOSOC and all other relevant organs of the United Nations.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n I will devote special attention to impact-oriented and regular consultations with civil society organizations, youth representations, scientific institutions, knowledge centers, faith based organizations, representatives of the business communities and key institutions of finance.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Excellencies,\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n We live in times that rock the foundation this Organization was built upon.<\/span> With multiple crises looming, none less than the credibility of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ is at stake. 77 years ago, Member States have shown that lasting peace can be built on the ashes of war<\/span>. <\/span>We need the same resolve today to stand up to the challenges that threaten international peace and security as well as our sustainable future on this planet.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n During my rounds of consultations most of you expressed concern about declining trust and the loss of the spirit of cooperation. We all may have an interpretation of how we have got here, but we all concur on the point that it is only by joining forces that we can tackle the unprecedented global challenges of today and tomorrow.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Let me recall the words of the industrialist Henry Ford: “Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Thank you, Mr. President, and thank you all for your trust and cooperation.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Headquarters, New York<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":361,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"on","_et_pb_old_content":" Excellencies, colleagues,<\/p> I welcome you all to our second meeting and our first interaction following the resumed part of the session.<\/p> Before I begin, I would like to recognize the loss of our dear friend and esteemed colleague, Ms. Gail Farngalo.<\/p> A Liberian national, Gail was my Team Leader for Human Rights and was active on gender during both the 75th<\/sup> and 76th<\/sup> sessions. She leaves behind a legacy of achievements and a groundswell of respect and affection from across the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ and diplomatic communities. Her presence is certainly felt here today.<\/p> Colleagues,<\/p> When I took on this Presidency of Hope, I pledged to make gender equality a priority area for the 76th<\/sup> session. I continue to look to the board for its wisdom and expertise, as I endeavour to fulfil that pledge.<\/p> In this regard, I have already benefited from the board\u2019s advice, from when we met on October 28th<\/sup> last year.<\/p> Acting on that advice, I committed to ensuring that all my five rays of hope, and all my major initiatives, are approached with a gender lens.<\/p> I made sure that the composition of my office is gender-balanced.<\/p> I have committed to participating only in panels that have equal gender representation.<\/p> Throughout my official interactions and travels, I have endeavoured to meet with women, including heads of states and governments, scientists, civil society representatives, and youth.<\/p> And I am proud to inform you that five young women have been recruited into the Fellowship for HOPE<\/em> that my office recently launched. The Fellowship as you are well aware is targeted at benefiting young diplomats from underrepresented countries, pursuing careers in diplomacy or public service.<\/p> Colleagues,<\/p> While recognizing that we have a long way to go in the battle for gender-equality, I am proud of what my team has been able to accomplish within the past few months.<\/p> Our work continues.<\/p> We will continue to raise our voices on issues disproportionately impacting women, such as domestic violence and work place harassment. We will continue to push the importance of gender-equal work spaces.<\/p> And we will continue to find new paths to empower young women with ambitious professional aspirations.<\/p> Now is not the time to rest on our laurels.<\/p> With the board\u2019s guidance and support, we must use the many opportunities over the coming months to further empower women and girls, and dismantle discriminatory practices against them.<\/p> There are several upcoming events that will provide us such opportunities. I look forward to the board\u2019s suggestions on how we can best utilize them.<\/p> As an example, the International Day of Women and Girls in science is fast approaching. We must recognize that women\u2019s contributions in science and technology have helped us cure diseases; discover new horizons in space; and develop technologies that have vastly improved our quality of life.<\/p> As we celebrate their achievements, we must also open pathways for young girls who aspire to follow in the footsteps of pioneers in science and technology.<\/p> Colleagues,<\/p> Let us also reflect that the theme chosen by the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women for this year is on \u201cachieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls in the context of climate change, environmental and disaster risk reduction policies and programmes\u201d.<\/p> As we strive to meet our obligations to the planet, let us recognize the important work done by women and girls at the forefront of the climate crisis, and whose humanitarian work in disaster-stricken areas has helped save lives and rebuild communities. We owe it to them to not only celebrate their work but to support them.<\/p> Colleagues,<\/p> Our programme of work for the months ahead has been circulated to members prior to the meeting, for consideration and feedback. Please note that the events we have planned are not exhaustive. I welcome further suggestions from the board on the content and format of future events and activities.<\/p> Colleagues,<\/p> We have made much progress within a short while.
