Mr. Abdulla Shahid, President of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly

29 March 2022

Excellencies, distinguished delegates,

Over the course of four centuries, more than fifteen million men, women and children from across Africa were subjugated, shackled and involuntarily transported to the Americas. Many perished on this journey, succumbing to its appalling conditions. For those that survived, a life without compassion, joy, and freedom awaited. Their remaining days were filled with torture and forced labor.

This was the brutal reality of the transatlantic slave trade, which to this day remains the largest forced movement of a people in history.

Slavery was meant to take away the names, individuality and legacy of its victims. By documenting, sharing and reflecting on their stories, we prevent them from fading into obscurity, and we reaffirm their individual human worth.

That is why today we observe the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade, under the theme: “Stories of Courage: Resistance to Slavery and Unity against Racism”.

It is our obligation to continue to raise awareness of the pernicious legacies of slavery, including racism, discrimination and social injustice, while also celebrating the bravery of those who stood against this brutal system

We must never forget, and we must always contemplate the lessons of this tragic chapter in our history.

And as we do so, we must acknowledge certain facts without equivocation. This includes the fact that many people of African descent were stolen from their homes, put in chains, separated from their families, bought, sold, abused, tortured and violated in body and spirit.

This collective trauma, endured for hundreds of years by successive generations, cannot be expected to heal quickly. To this very day, the consequences of the transatlantic slave trade – and the racist attitudes that facilitated it – still endure, and affect the lives of many people of African descent.

Years ago, I visited Goree Island in Senegal, which was the largest slave-trading centre on the West African coast from the 15th to the 19th century.

Packed into the small cells, the enslaved who were chained and shackled, had only the small “door of no return” through which every man, woman and child walked into the slave boat to be shipped across the Atlantic Ocean to build the new world.

Slavery was not only a dreadful individual ordeal, but a cultural trauma whereby a group of people were subjected to such inhuman pain and torture that it dehumanized their existence, their group identity, values, feelings, and their cultural worldview.

Excellencies,

As acknowledged by the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action, people of African descent continue to disproportionately suffer the consequences of the slave trade and colonialism. They experience multiple and aggravated forms of discrimination. That discrimination often intersects with, and is amplified by, other forms of prejudice, targeting language, religion, gender, sexual orientation and gender identity, disabilities, or birth status, among other things.

And in recent years the COVID-19 pandemic has been a compounding factor, as it has put an immense strain on social systems and laid bare the stark inequities faced by individuals in already marginalized communities.

Standing in solidarity with victims is the bare minimum we can do. We must act to address these inequalities.

Last week I visited the Ark of Return, the United Nation’s permanent memorial to the victims of the transatlantic slave trade. It stands as a reminder that, only by acknowledging history can we understand how it continues to inform and affect the present. Only then can we properly address the injustices that still linger. And only by addressing those injustices can we truly honor those victims who fell prey to one of the most vicious institutions ever devised by humanity.

So, in that spirit, let us honor the memory of the victims by standing against racism and discrimination, by calling for greater commitments to social justice, and by celebrating the equal worth and dignity of all our communities, irrespective of caste, creed or skin color.

With hope and conviction let us resolve to write a new chapter in our history, filled with justice and equality.

I thank you.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

Annual commemorative meeting of the General Assembly to mark the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade

Excellencies, colleagues,

I welcome you all to our second meeting and our first interaction following the resumed part of the session.

Before I begin, I would like to recognize the loss of our dear friend and esteemed colleague, Ms. Gail Farngalo.

A Liberian national, Gail was my Team Leader for Human Rights and was active on gender during both the 75th and 76th sessions. She leaves behind a legacy of achievements and a groundswell of respect and affection from across the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ and diplomatic communities. Her presence is certainly felt here today.

Colleagues,

When I took on this Presidency of Hope, I pledged to make gender equality a priority area for the 76th session. I continue to look to the board for its wisdom and expertise, as I endeavour to fulfil that pledge.

In this regard, I have already benefited from the board’s advice, from when we met on October 28th last year.

Acting on that advice, I committed to ensuring that all my five rays of hope, and all my major initiatives, are approached with a gender lens.

I made sure that the composition of my office is gender-balanced.

I have committed to participating only in panels that have equal gender representation.

Throughout my official interactions and travels, I have endeavoured to meet with women, including heads of states and governments, scientists, civil society representatives, and youth.

And I am proud to inform you that five young women have been recruited into the Fellowship for HOPE that my office recently launched. The Fellowship as you are well aware is targeted at benefiting young diplomats from underrepresented countries, pursuing careers in diplomacy or public service.

Colleagues,

While recognizing that we have a long way to go in the battle for gender-equality, I am proud of what my team has been able to accomplish within the past few months.

Our work continues.

We will continue to raise our voices on issues disproportionately impacting women, such as domestic violence and work place harassment. We will continue to push the importance of gender-equal work spaces.

And we will continue to find new paths to empower young women with ambitious professional aspirations.

Now is not the time to rest on our laurels.

With the board’s guidance and support, we must use the many opportunities over the coming months to further empower women and girls, and dismantle discriminatory practices against them.

There are several upcoming events that will provide us such opportunities. I look forward to the board’s suggestions on how we can best utilize them.

As an example, the International Day of Women and Girls in science is fast approaching. We must recognize that women’s contributions in science and technology have helped us cure diseases; discover new horizons in space; and develop technologies that have vastly improved our quality of life.

As we celebrate their achievements, we must also open pathways for young girls who aspire to follow in the footsteps of pioneers in science and technology.

Colleagues,

Let us also reflect that the theme chosen by the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women for this year is on “achieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls in the context of climate change, environmental and disaster risk reduction policies and programmes”.

As we strive to meet our obligations to the planet, let us recognize the important work done by women and girls at the forefront of the climate crisis, and whose humanitarian work in disaster-stricken areas has helped save lives and rebuild communities. We owe it to them to not only celebrate their work but to support them.

Colleagues,

Our programme of work for the months ahead has been circulated to members prior to the meeting, for consideration and feedback. Please note that the events we have planned are not exhaustive. I welcome further suggestions from the board on the content and format of future events and activities.

Colleagues,

We have made much progress within a short while. And with the board’s support and guidance, I am sure that we can keep up this strong momentum.

I look forward to working alongside all of you to achieve our vision of a gender-equal world.

Thank you.

[111
550,556,553

post-262625","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-speeches","tag-ga","tag-pga","tag-shahid","et-doesnt-have-format-content","et_post_format-et-post-format-standard
<!--
